• Chapitre - Chapter 5

It was at moments like this that Elizabeth felt a veil go up between herself and the rest of the world; between herself and the friends who would never know the forces that motivated Elizabeth. How can I ever tell you the truth? […]

She sat on the edge of the bathtub with the photograph in her hand and hung her head. Maybe she should go to therapy for this. No one in her family went to therapy; they would want to know why she needed it. Besides, she didn’t think she could tell even a psychiatrist that when she was a little she had torn the legs off her Ken doll and built him a wheelchair made out of Duplos. Once, she threw him off her grandmother’s balcony, called it a hiking accident, and wrapped his arms in wet toilet paper that hardened into cast.  […]

Like a lightning bolt, her mind flashed an image of her kneeling in front of him, stretching her arms and running her hands over his bare chest. Elizabeth closed her eyes and focused on her breath. She let the image pass. Was this what everyone felt? For normal guys or girls? Elizabeth could never know for sure, but she hoped it was. She hoped that she was feeling something normal at last.

There had been no incident in her childhood to trigger a connection between lust and disability. There was no reason for it; it was just there and always had been. Elizabeth had no experience of what it felt like to have these feelings for a man that she could actually express them to. Or for a man that she could tell her friends or family. […]

Elizabeth walked with her hand on his shoulder, feeling the thick, solid muscle across his upper back. She had expected that she would want to show off being with him. In fact, she had worried that her motivations might not have been pure. Perhaps part of her attraction was wanting to look cool and interesting to other people. […]

Elizabeth sourit.

Elizabeth smiled. She had no qualms about asking him personal questions. The only thing she wouldn’t ask was how he broke his back. She had studied disability and read many people’s stories. They all said that people were always bothering them for the details of their accidents. So Elizabeth didn’t want to seem like your average, ignorant, able-bodied person.

She also couldn’t talk about disability for the same reason she couldn’t talk about her own desire for it. If she said the words, the truth might be written across her face plainly for anyone to read. […]

Elizabeth liked the look of his car when they got to it. […] Elizabeth wasn’t sure whether to watch Stewart get in or not. She desperately wanted to, but she also wanted to seem cool to him. She wanted him to think that his disability didn’t factor for her, that she was hardly even aware of it. Sadly, she was hyper aware of it, maybe more so than the average person. […]
